📌 Class 2 of 3👩🎓 Student⏱️ 1 hour📘 Level: A1🧑🏫 Prof. Nilton Viturino
🎯 Goal: Master the -ção sound (nasal), use the diminutive naturally, and learn the personal pronouns of Brazilian Portuguese, including the famous "a gente".
Almost everything that ends in -tion in English ends in -ção in Portuguese, and it's pronounced ah-oun (a closed, nasal sound, like the "on" in the French word "bon").
These are cognates, you already know hundreds of these words!

⭐ Bonus tip: in English, "-sion" words also follow this rule. decision → decisão · television → televisão · vision → visão · occasion → ocasião
2 🔊 Diminutive, -inho / -inha
-inho / -inha → affection · small size · emphasis
💡 In Brazil, the diminutive is everywhere!
It's not just to say something is "small", it's used to sound more friendly, gentle, and natural. "Espera um pouquinho" (wait just a little bit) sounds much more natural than "Espera um pouco" in Brazil.
⭐ 3 uses of the diminutive:
1️⃣ Small things, real reduced size (gatinho = little cat, papelzinho = little paper)
2️⃣ Emphasis, reinforces the idea (rapidinho = super fast, pouquinho = just a tiny bit)
3️⃣ Affection (warm tone), expresses care, kindness (cafezinho = a little coffee, amorzinho = sweetheart, bonitinha = cute)
Rapidinho
(Jápiyinñu)
Real quick, emphasis
Minutinho
(Minuchinñu)
Just a minute, emphasis
Segundinho
(Segunyinñu)
Just a second, emphasis
Cafezinho
(Kafezinñu)
A little coffee, affection
Gatinho
(Gachinñu)
Kitten, small size
Pouquinho
(Poukinñu)
A tiny little bit, emphasis
Papelzinho
(Papeuzinñu)
Little piece of paper, small size
Amorzinho
(Amozinñu)
Sweetheart, affection
Bonitinha
(Bonichinña)
Cute (tenderly), affection
💡 Rule: word ends in a vowel, drop the vowel + add -inho/-inha
pouco → pouquinho · café → cafezinho · rápido → rapidinho
word ends in a consonant, add it directly
papel → papelzinho · amor → amorzinho

Nilton was born in São Paulo and has lived in Colombia for more than 10 years. That's where he discovered what he loves doing most: teaching Portuguese to people who will actually use the language, at work, at university, in real life.
He has taught at language centers and inside large companies in the Valle de Aburrá, such as ISA, Interconexión Eléctrica, SmartFit, Grupo Éxito, Bancolombia, and Absolute. Each group needed a different kind of Portuguese: administration, technology, development, help desk, sales, psychology, economics. Nilton adapted the method to each reality, always applying the language to the student's daily work, never just theory.
The result? Many students went on to study or do an exchange program in Brazil. Some still live there today, living in Portuguese what they learned in class.
This is the same method you're using right now, at Clases Portugués. 🚀
